Is there a refillable money card that is available to all ages, and will work in Canada

Is there a refillable money card that is available to all ages, and will work in Canada?
I am going to Canada in February, and want to deal with plastic instead of cash. I will, however, bring some cash in case they don't take visa, master card, whatever. I am under 18 too, so I need something available to people of all ages. And I need something that they will replace if I loose it. And If possible, it would be excellent if you need a pin. So to wrap it up, I need a cash card that is refillable, works internationally, and if possible, has a pin.

Visa gift cards work great. Get several for lower amounts. Have a great Time.
2 :
We have Visa and Master Card in Canada and they are accepted almost everywhere. American Express and Discover are accepted in only most places. There are prepaid Visa and Master Cards that can be purchased once here but your US cards will work fine so it would be kind of pointless. Cash is acceptable but it's better if you switch it to Canadian currency at a bank or currency exchange either here or before you leave. If you try to spend US cash at a store or restaurant you will likely get ripped off on the exchange rate. Good luck. I'm sure you will see Canada is pretty much like the USA.
3 :
Visa Pre-paid card. Works just like a Visa, anywhere a Visa is accepted, refillable. Only thing I can't say is if it has a PIN but it will work at an ATM. If you lose it, they will replace.

Can I maintain American citizenship but work and live in Canada

Can I maintain American citizenship but work and live in Canada?
How does that work? Would I have to pay taxes to both countries (or special kinds of taxes)? What rights would I enjoy if I just strip myself of my American citizenship and just become a Canadian? How many Americans live and work in Canada? Mamour: I'm a little confused. Do you mean I'd have to pay taxes to the U.S. even 10 years after I renounced my citizenship? Also, I meant more what rights would I enjoy as a Canadian citizen rather than just as a person living in Canada.

yes you do have to pay taxes(file each year)what rights would you enjoy from renouncing your US citizenship? none!even if you renounced to your US citizenship you would still have to file for 10 years, afterwards, ps: yes, even after you renounced, you still have to file for 10 more years. not sure why anyone would do this? think of you would lose from renouncing US citizenship?
2 :
You pay Canadian taxes on the income you make in Canada and US taxes on what you make in the US. You have to declare the income you made in the US on your Canadian taxes and vice versa. However, this is only so you can only claim your personal exemption in one country, not both. You will not be double taxed. You do not have to renounce US citizenship. There are hundreds of thousands dual US/Canadian citizens.

Will my Mastercard Credit Card work in Canada for regualr sales

Will my Mastercard Credit Card work in Canada for regualr sales?
I'm going to canada in a few days and was curious if my mastercard will work if i go out shopping. The exchange rate is 1 us dollar = .86 canadian. is it a good idea to use my credit card, if i can?

1 :
Yes, your Mastercard will work. The currency conversion automatically happens - though you'll see it on your statement, not on the store receipt.
2 :
A Mastercard credit card from the U.S. will work in Canada. There is usually a foreign transaction fee of 1-3%. Your bank might impose a higher fee, so ask that bank before you leave. Also, the exchange rate used by the bank for credit card transactions might be different from the exchange rate that you mentioned and might change before your trip.

Most jobs pay a reasonable salary except in the service industry and jobs that require no education. You should not be choosing a career by how much it pays. You should choose a career that you will find rewarding and stimulating. How much a job pays should not be your top priority. I know from experience that it is better to work in a job you like with the salary being secondary. It's not like you are going to starve to death. This is Canada, by the way.
2 :
If you are not a professional, or skilled worker and dont have a solid job offer from an employer who can prove there is no qualified Cdn to fill the position you will not be allowed to immigrate to Canada. You could immigrate as an entrepreneur if you have several hundred thousands of dollars to invest in a business in Canada that will provide a specified number of jobs for Cdns There is a point system by which you qualify. This covers things like education, work experience, solid employment history, references, skill levels, language ability, financial security, medical check, background check, criminal check etc
3 :
It depends what you can do. What are yous skills. There is little demand for unskilled people in Canada right now. Unemployment for unskilled people is very high. Thus the wage being offered for unskilled labor in Canada is essentially zero. If you find a job an unskilled person can maybe make $8.00 an hour. This is not enough to live on by yourself.

Can Ford Sponsor me to work in Canada

Can Ford Sponsor me to work in Canada?
I am currently working at Ford after completing a 1 year Trade Certification on Automotive Technology and a 3 month course with Ford (Ford Fact) With all Ford Certifications. I've been trying to get to Canada and I guess I need a sponsor to get a work permit so I can work in Canada. So my question is, can Ford Sponsor me so I can be able to get a work permit to work in Canada? Thank you.

Doubt it. There are lots of unemployed auto workers in Canada.
2 :
Generally, to get work permit, the employer need to get HRDSC confirmation (Labour Market Opinion) for the offered position. In most cases, tho get this LMO the employer must show that there is no Canadian nor PR that can and or willing to take the position, even though the remuneration (salary, benefits, etc.) is at least as good as the standard. So, to sponsor you, first Ford need to open the position and publish the opening, then if Ford cannot Canadian / PR that qualified for the job, then Ford can file to get HRDSC confirmation / LMO. After LMO issued and a job offer issued to you, then you can apply for work permit for the job. Obviously, if many Canadian / PR that qualified for the job apply for the job, LMO cannot be issued. There is some exceptions to the rule, such as NAFTA professionals exceptions for American getting some professional jobs (the list below).

*Is there a way to work in Canada without a work permit

*Is there a way to work in Canada without a work permit?*?
Hey guys, my family just moved to Canada last year and we still do not have citizenship for Canada. I am a 17 year old male and my parents have a work permit, but I only have a student permit, no work permit. I really want to work however, and to make some money for myself. Is there any way I can work without a work permit? What entitles a person to be able to work in Canada? Thanks a lot!

this might be your answer, sponge divers in canada have been known to make decent money while living under the radar
3 :
NO you cannot work while you are a student - you will not be eligible for a work permit as you must have post secondary education and professional experience to be eligible for any work permit. These are what your parents had in order for them to get their work permit. Your parents have a work permit and thus your entire family are NOT eligible to get Canadian citizenship since you are NOT permanent residents. If you want to work under the table for cash jobs, you can do things like babysitting, shovelling snow, walking the neighbours dogs, washing cars etc. Demand cash only - NO cheques - and do NOT open any bank account. Canadians have to pay tax on the interest on savings and you cant do that since you are not eligible to have a SIN. You cannot work for for ANY employer at all. You are not entitled to get a SIN card (where SIN = SSN) . You are NOT eligible to work for any employer - such as McDonalds, Wendys, Harvey's, Tim Hortons, KFC, Taco Bell or any fast food place. You cant work as a sales assistant or a cashier or a grocery bagger or a stock person (restocking shelves), or anything like that.

How do Elections in Canada work

How do Elections in Canada work?
I have been told that the winner of an election in Canada (for Prime Minister) is based on how many seats a party has in the House of Commons after the election. I always thought that the winner was determined by the popular vote for the individual person. Am I correct? Thanks ~
Civic Participation - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
they don't... if they did, no one would care... its canada
2 :
We vote for who we want to represent our area, each representative is a part of a larger party. The leader of the party with the most seats becomes prime minister (as long as he gets elected in his/her riding). If the party leader does not get elected in his riding, the party elects a new leader based on who in the party was elected.
3 :
No, Canada has a parliamentary system. Each of the parties in Canada, which are: Conservative, Liberal, New Democrat Party, and Green Party. They each have a chosen leader to be the head of the party. Then each party has representatives to run for election in their respective ridings. These are called MPP's and they are the one's trying to gain seats. There is over 300 seats I believe. Anyway, whatever party has control of the most seats becomes the leading party and the head of that party becomes Primie Minister. The party with the second most number of votes becomes the leading opposition party. Technically, then most Canadians don't actually get to vote for their Prime Minister. Only those whom are living in the riding that the Prime Minister is actually running in.
4 :
There is no popular vote for an individual person. Harper was only on the ballot in one riding in Calgary. It's not like here. No, the leader of the party with the most seats is PM.
5 :
Braden is very close to correct, though the elected officals are MPs (Members of Parliament), not MPPs, and he left out the Bloc Quebecois, the separatist party, which only runs candidates in Quebec, but takes most of the seats from that province. One major difference from the US is that all cabinet members must be elected MPs, not just pals of the leader

It should work, but you may be paying in Canadian money as in, the exchange rate. I would also notify your credit card provider and the credit union you have your debit card with that you will be traveling out of the country so they will not see transactions in another country as potential fraud and block your account.

Is a Permanent resident in the USA allowed to work in Canada

Is a Permanent resident in the USA allowed to work in Canada?
my wife lives in the good ol' USA but wants to work in Canada. She is a USA permanent resident. Is she legally allowed to work in Canada as long as she files this in her tax forms? Does she file taxes for Canada and the USA?This is actually her old job and she is still a Canadian citizen
Immigration - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes
2 :
If she is a Canadian citizen, she has a permanent right to seek employment in Canada, even if she lives in the USA.
3 :
As a Canadian citizen, she always has a right to live & work in Canada, and to come & go as she pleases. Yes, as a US permanent resident, she is subject to US income taxes, but if she actually lives in Canada for at least 330 days a year (as well as working there), she'd be subject to Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. Also, US-Canada tax treaty means the income taxes she pays in Canada on income earned in Canada is credited toward her US tax bill. Although she has to file, she should probably end up owing zero US taxes. Maintaining her status as Legal Permanent Resident if she lives and works in Canada could get sticky. Or do you two live in a border town and she'd work in Canada and live in US? This goes on quite a bit in Detroit/Windsor, Niagara Falls NY/ON, etc. Not a big deal.

How does maternity leave work in canada

How does maternity leave work in canada?
Does it matter what kind of job you work? or how long do you have to work, does it have to be a certain amount of hours at one job, or throughout the whole year?

1 :
you dont get paid mat leave in canada. you can apply for EI (employment insurance) but you need to have 600 hours in the past year ( a year from the date you apply) and no it does not have to be at one certain job, you could have had 5 jobs, all that matters is if you have those 600 hours.
2 :
you get one year off and you have to have enough hours to get unemployment. 600 hours 52 weeks or since the start of her last claim. 15 weeks is maternity and the rest is parental leave. ask the company you work for if they have some sort of plan for materniny. at my work they paid you 95% of your regular income for the 15 weeks then after that you would only get your EI. http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/lp/spila/wlb/wfp/11Maternity_Leave.shtml#6 That is the link to the info about maternity leave in canada and getin EI
3 :
Look up the canadian website. I am in Canada. You apply to Ei for maternity leave. You need to have put in 600 hours into a job to get it. I seem to recall the website it www.hrsdc.gc.ca...I think its 17 weeks maternity, and the rest is called parental leave. You get paid 55% of your wage to a maximum of $450 a week.

If I am a US citizen with a temporary work visa in Canada and get married, will I lose my ability to work

If I am a US citizen with a temporary work visa in Canada and get married, will I lose my ability to work?
I am trying to relocate to Canada from the United States because I am going to marry a girl from Canada. I am applying for jobs and once I have a valid job offer, I will apply for a temporary work visa. Once we are married, I will apply for either a permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship. However, she heard from several people that I might not be able to legally work in Canada for up to a year after we are married. That doesn't make sense to me...would I then have to quit my job and just sit at home for a year? Would I be eligible for unemployment? Health care, etc? If anyone knows if this is true or not, please write and with information or resources that prove or disprove it. And if it is true, are there ways around it? And how does marriage affect citizenship eligibility for both the US and Canada? Thanks in advance for your help. God bless.

you should not
2 :
First of all, congrats on the upcoming marriage! I also married a Canadian, and had no trouble at all. Before we got married I had a temporary resident visa. The marriage shouldn't affect your ability to work-- that doesn't make sense. You would still be bound by whatever restrictions your temp visa stipulates (permission to work, etc). Once you are married you can apply for permanent residence, provided that your spouse agrees to sponsor you, and as long as you pay all application/residence fees. You can then apply for citizenship once you've been in the country for 3 out of the past 4 years (time spent in the country with a temporary visa counts as half time). As for citizenship, Canada does allow dual citizenship with other countries. The US has different rules, but if you are a US citizen by birth then you will have no trouble. A US citizen can acquire foreign citizenship and will NOT lose their US citizenship (contrary to the popular belief that the US does not permit dual citizenship. That is only in the case of naturalization-- when a new immigrant becomes a US citizen they must renounce their previous citizenship. But a born citizen never loses theirs). Good luck!
3 :
Your ability to work in Canada has absolutely nothing to do with getting married. So long as you obtain a job with a company that is willing to sponsor you on a work visa, you will be able to work. A work visa (TN visa) is for a period of 12 months and must be reapplied for every 12 months or every time you change jobs (whichever comes first). Once you are married, you will qualify for permanent residency or be able to apply for citizenship (you can actually maintain your US Citizenship and apply for "dual citizenship". I am a US citizen (who is a stay at home mom) that has recently moved to Canada (my husband is Canadian). I am working with a company in Calgary (that is where we moved) that is helping us apply for my permanent residency. Possibly they can help you? Canadian Immigration Solutions- (403) 246-2692
4 :
If you are applying for a temporary work visa through a company DO NOT TELL them you are planning on getting married. My friend married an American fellow this summer. The immigration lawyer said that it is better not to mention that you are planning to get married while applying for visa's. The other issue is that the Conservative Federal Government is trying to make changes to the immigration laws which could make the process even slower. I do know that my friends that have married non-Canadian citizens have had to wait a year before getting an official work permit. As for having your temporary work permit I am unsure if renewing it once expired will be more difficult once you are married. This website is a good place to start. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html By the way make sure to have your relationship documented such as having pictures of the two of you with friends and family of your fiance. You may need to have friends write up a letter of recognition in support of your relationship. Good luck and congratulations.
5 :
you mean your right to work! not ability
6 :
Getting married shouldn't affect anything - if you have a work visa, that covers your work but doesn't limit what you do with your private life. But if you're concerned, don't go by the guesses you'll get online. Check with Canadian immigration, through the nearest consulate, and find out for sure. You certainly don't want to jeopardize either your job or your marriage. Good luck to you, and your fiancee.

What qualifications do you have? Highly skilled & highly educated? Do you qualify for an employment visa? See the Immigration Canada website for details on what is required. Do NOT start looking for a job in Canada until you are absolutly certain that you are fully qualified for an employment visa. If you meet or exceed every requirement, then you can start jobhunting. If you find a job, then your employer applies for the work visa, and you provide all the supporting documentation to prove you meet all visa requirements. Note that Canada's workforce needs are rather limited and their unemployment rate is about 9%. Plus for any job for which a company might search internationally instead of locally, you are in extreme competition from around the world. Lots of people want to move to Canada. Very, very few qualify, and only a tiny percentage of those who qualify for work visas will ever find work there. Competition is tough.

How does comission based labour laws work in Canada

How does comission based labour laws work in Canada?
My girlfriend is a hairstylist. The owner of the salon she worked at opened a new salon last week and brought my girlfriend to the new shop. She makes all of her money from commission. The issue is that the new salon that she is working at is getting about 1 client max a day right now so she is making less per hour than she would if she was making minimum wage. Are there any kind of laws in Canada that helps protect this? She is basically providing free help and labour to help the owners start there shop without the payoffs they will retain.

Yes . There is a demand for pharmacists, physiotherapists and nurses ( generally para medical staff) in Canada. The qualifications required are very stringent. You have to get in touch with a recruitment or a hospital staffing agency in Toronto/Vancouver. Similar agencies are there in USA too , who will find placement for you in Canada. You can locate recruitment agencies in Cairo (Egypt). Approach them.
2 :
There is a shortage of pharmacists in Canada. But it is very important that you make sure that your qualifications will be recognized by the licensing body in Canada. To find out about that you could try googling something like "Canadian Association of Pharmacists" and see if there is somewhere you could write and get more detailed information. Shoppers Drug Mart is a chain drug store that you might approach, or you could try one of the big hospitals like University Health Network in Toronto. Either of them might be a possibility for sponsored entry to Canada. www. cic.gc.ca is the Canadian immigration web site, check that out for more general information.

Are you allowed to live over in Canada and America from the UK to try and train and work as a pro wrestler

Are you allowed to live over in Canada and America from the UK to try and train and work as a pro wrestler?
Are there any visa/immigration laws that will not allow a person from the UK to go and train and work in Canada and the US to become a professional wrestler?

As long as you get the right Visa there its perfectly fine, no idea what the visa laws are but best thing to do is contact the US embassy in the UK and talk to them, they will be able to help you with everything you need to know and do.

USA Green Card Holder need to work in Canada

USA Green Card Holder need to work in Canada?
I am a US Green card holder and would like to move & work in Canada. Main reason being I am getting married with Indian national and would not be able to bring her to USA, Because US green card laws are strict So I am planning to let her stay near the US border and travel back and forth to US or may be work-in Canada. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. -Best Regards

1 :
I've lived in Canada most of my life. If you are a US green card holder, that means that you aren't a USA citizen, that you are a citizen of some other country. That is what Canadian employers are going to look at when you apply for a job. A US green card doesn't open any doors as far as employment in Canada is concerned. However, once you are married to woman who holds a First Nations membership card, you may be to entitled to some employment rights under their self-government, but you will still need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), and your employer may have to prove that he can't find a Canadian citizen to fill the job position that you have applied for. For accurate, up-to-date information, you should check with Employment Canada. I highly recommend you do even before seeking employment so that you will know first-hand what your rights and restrictions are.
2 :
To achieve employment in Canada, you'd have to go through the working visa/permanent residency process for Canada - your existing US documentation does you absolutely no good. Canada's permanent residency laws and enforcement aren't all that much less strict than the US ... about the only thing going for you in bringing an Indian national into the country would be that the relative wait list is shorter (fewer wanting to immigrate to Canada, with respect to the number of individuals trying to enter the US). You *may* run into difficulty in living in one country and working in another based upon taxation. For example - you'd be spending at least half your day in Canada (at home) ... which means, over the course of a year, you'd rack up enough hours to be considered a Canadian resident for taxation purposes. Your US firm would likely only be withholding sufficient funds to cover the US taxes ... which leaves you holding the bag, so to speak, come April. Your best bet is to pick a country (the US would be good, since you already have PR status there) and stick with it.

How many hours of work is considered to be full-time work in Canada

How many hours of work is considered to be full-time work in Canada?
Is it necessary to work 8 hours per day or is employment still considered full-time with a more flexible schedule, say working 5 hours on a particular day and maybe 9 hours on another depending on your schedule, but with the total equal to or above the minimum number of hours considered to be full-time? Thanks.

As long as you work over 37 1/2 hours a week, it's full time.
4 :
7.5 hours per day, equaling 37.5 hours per week (unless otherwise stated by your employee union).
5 :
In general 35 to 40 hours a week is considered full time in Canada. Depends on the employer and the nature of the industry, flexible hours are possible.
6 :
Its all about time served for the week. It doesn't matter if you work 35 hours straight or a few hours a day for 7 days. Laws are different per province. So double check with your employment bureau.

It is going to depend on what type of permitting you have to reside in Canada. If your family has already been accepted as residents, then most likely you won't require a special work permit - but check with a lawyer to make certain. If you are only "planning" but nothing has been done yet, you will require a work permit or a residency permit with permission to work. Immigration Canada has more information: http://nhe1.com/516dfa Good Luck.
2 :
probably a permit, you might have to write a test or something.

Once I get married in Canada, can I come back to US to wait for work permit

Once I get married in Canada, can I come back to US to wait for work permit?
Once I get married in Canada, can I come back to US to wait for work permit? Most of the people would like to stay with their spouse and so am I; however, I don't want to put more weight on my wife's shoulder in order to sponsor me so I would still like to work and earn some money in the US before I get to work in Canada. Is it possible? Or I need to stay in Canada to receive my work permit?
Immigration - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You do need to go home (USA) to apply for an outside spousal visa - they are being processed quite quickly ( 6 to 9 months) and you get to keep working while you wait. Your wife can come and visit you while the application is being processed. If you do enter Canada, you would be much better off staying in Canada. Sure you cannot work for several months of processing, but once you have passed the first stage of approval, you qualify fior an open work permit and work for anyone you choose. Processing for inside applications are currently taking between 1 and 2 years but at least you are together. The wife must have a job and income in order to sponsor you. About not being a burden on the spouse - well she cannot sponsor you unless she has a job and income anyway - so she is more or less REQUIRED to support you and the marriage whether you live with her or not. It actually looks a lot better if you do live with her. Sure you cannot work for some of that time, but thats part of marriage. You need to SHOW CIC that your marriage is genuine. You scuttling off home after you get married does NOT show that you are genuinely in love and wanting to make a home and live together. On those grounds your application may be denied.
2 :
Outland application: You can go back to the US and work, visit your wife when you want, if you are approved, you will have your PR (permanent residency) in 5-10 months. If they are suspicious of your application, they will call you in for an interview (in the US). If you are denied, you can appeal, takes about a year. Inland application: You have to stay in Canada, strongly advised to not even travel while in process. You apply for a work permit with your application, if you are approved, you will have your work permit in 6-7 months and PR in 12-18 months. If they are suspicious of your application, they will transfer your file to the local office without giving you a work permit. Getting an interview with the local office depends on how busy they are but can take up to 3 years in some places. Immigration thinking that your relationship is not real can happen regardless. You have to send immigration the data to prove that your relationship is real. If you have a good application, you will be approved. I absolutely do not think they will assume your relationship is not real just because you can't afford to sit in Canada without working for 6-7 months.

Probably, yes, you'll need to file income taxes according to where you live. You would be considered non-resident in Canada. You'll need to file tax returns in both Canada and the USA. See an accountant with experiance in dealing with your situation.

Work in Canada for recent US college grads

Work in Canada for recent US college grads?
I'm still in college but when I graduate with my BA, I want to live and work in Canada, and eventually become a citizen. I'm getting my BA in Theatre with concentration in directing and management. I'm not a performing artist. I've looked on Canadian websites but I'm afraid that without being really established I'll have trouble, I was wondering if there is something I'm overlooking? I have a clean criminal record (not so much as a speeding ticket) and in good health. Oops, I forgot to give country of origin. I am a US citizen, born American.

I'm sure if you get a work visa and a residence visa for Canada...you'll do just fine. And you will have a BA degree Double Trouble!! :D Nations love to have academics to become immigrants, so I think you are not in danger my friend. Just get your visa's maybe make a few Canuck friends off the net or something so you can have refferences and enjoy your life in Canada.
2 :
Try student visa first find a job while in school and build up from there. I believe it is all about being a part of the community.
3 :
Well you will need a standing job offer, relating to your degree, in order to start the immigration process. This one is about as hard for US citizens moving to Canada as it is for Canadian citizens moving to the US. Your best bet would be to start off on a student visa, or simply a temporary work visa.

go to a Canada immigration website.
2 :
If you are a manager or above and have particular skills that make you unique, yes. If you are a store clerk, you won't get a visa because there is no need for store clerks.
3 :
you dont ... your company should get the visa etc ...
4 :
the company must first ensure that there are NO canadians who can do the job first - and yes they must advertise and show proof that they have advertised the job in Canada and received no suitable applications. Retail jobs are NOT on the in demand list so do NOT expect to be approved for a work permit. I am going to assume that you work for Target or Marshalls - 2 new US chains that recently opened for business in canada - they will be required to hire Canadians first!!!!

1 :
You will pay tax to your cdn income to canada, but not to the USA. When u move back with your husband to Canada, have a cdn home, establish cdn economic and social ties, you are considered a cdn resident for tax purposes pursuant to article 4 of the canada-us tax treaty, and need to pay cdn taxes only, not US taxes. If u are a cdn resident, any future US income will also be subject to cdn taxation, and US taxes from those US income will be give foreign tax credit by the cdn govt. Addendum: After reading the other answer, I disagree with his view that the Canada-US tax treaty has nothing to do with your situation. It has. The fact that u have been living and presumably working in the US and therefore had US income and filing US tax return. The most important and critical is your first year in Canada living and working, having a cdn home, and may also in the process of selling or being rented out the US home while u r in Canada, with some US inevstment income, and maybe severance pay payable in your first year in Canada or at a later year, etc. And, u may also move to Canada during the year, say May 1, instead of January 1, and the dispute between the Canada Revenue Agency and the IRS is whether u are in fact a cdn resident and which country has the right to tax your Cdn and US income, but the Canada-US tax treaty provides the rules. For example, if you receive your severance pay from your uS employer in your 2nd year in Canada, the other person answering your question, per his reply, would require u to report the severance pay into cdn income in your 2nd year while the IRS would tax it because the pay arose in the US. The correct answer is that you do not need to report the severance pay into your cdn income, as the IRS would claim the exclusive right to tax the severance income because the income arose during your prior employment in the USA before you become a cdn resident. While some cases went thru unnoticed without being reviewed by the tax authorities of both countries (as the other person might personally have experienced in all his works), many cases did end up in the negotiation meetings between CRA & IRS pursuant to the Canada-US tax treaty.
2 :
Yes. As a US Citizen, you will always be required to file a 1040 and pay taxes on your world income. As a Canadian Resident, you will be required to file a T1 and pay taxes on your world income. You will then claim a Foreign Tax Credit on your Canadian return for taxes paid to the US. The US-Canada tax treaty has NOTHING to do with this.

Yes, but Canada is veru bad! I spent over three years looking hard for a job in Canada through the internet. I studied a lot about the Country. I got to know a lot about its culture, geography, history, politics and so on. It was very hard but I got to find a job approved by HRSDC, in February of this year, to work in Edmonton, Alberta. I submitted all required documentation to the Canadian consulate. For my surprise the immigration officer refused my work permit. He said that I do not have strong economic ties to my country. Is it not prejudice? Is the opportunities only for riches? Is not an unemployed an human? I tried to go legally, I did everything within the law. I had employer and place to stay. But what was the advantage of doing that legally? None - Canadian government refused my visa!
