How long can i stay and work in Canada without to be a Permanent Resident

How long can i stay and work in Canada without to be a Permanent Resident?
I live in UK and i'm thinking to go to Canada for a few Months to Years, and i need to know how much can i LEGALLY stay there without to be a Permanent Resident,i mean with Visa. Also without to be an official Permanent Resident, can i work, having car, house there? I don't have any problem to be Permanent Resident, but it's pretty hard i think.

Phone the Canadian Embassy and ask someone in the visa dept.

you need as visa to work in Canada your best bet would be a 12 month working holiday visa (if you qualify) you cant stay any longer than that unless your highly skilled
3 :
You can go to Canada as a tourist for up to six months but you may not work without a visa or access services .

you need to have a job, education and skills that are in demand and you can have a work permit that allows you to live in Canada for 1 to 3 years. but you must be educated, qualified and skilled to do one of the following jobs on this list http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#list
